We spent the first night with cousins David, Paula and Adria in their home in the SW area of Portland, down near Lewis & Clark College, where David works. Adria works as an assistant director at a horse barn, where she cares for horses and teaches riding. She invited us down to meet the horses one evening.
This horse gives back massages - really! And there wasn't even any horse slobber on me when he was done. I wanted to take him home.

While Holden liked feeding carrots to the horses, Riley wasn't so willing to be that up close and personal with the animals.
This is Luna, a sweet, tailless cat that rules the roost and owns the deck at the Fix home.
Despite Adria and her brother, Kyle, being in their 20s, Paula and David still had some of their playthings around. The trains were a hit.
Their home was warm and welcoming. Holden made himself right at home (OK, we all did!).
It was tough to say good-bye. We so enjoyed being there and being with them. The kids really took to Paula, David and Adria and still talk about them often!

One of our Portland evenings was spent with the Brandenburgers and Russell, who came down from Tacoma to work and visit with us. Their home was gorgeous, and they treated us to a yummy BBQ on the deck followed by lots of boy time in the driveway. It reminded me of summer nights of my childhood, with everyone in the backyard playing around.

Russell, hamming it up, as always:

It wouldn't be a visit with Pete and Russell unless someone hangs from a wall. At their old home in Phoenix, Pete erected a two-story climbing wall in their vaulted living room. The wall's been chopped in half and now dominates the garage:

Yes, Kevin is so very proud:
On our last night in Portland, we got some quality time with Shar and her fiance, Joe, who it was really great to get to know. For the first time during our trip, the kids got to bed at a decent time and we got a chance to visit.
Not only do they have a beautiful house, they live one block from this place that serves yummy pizza, has a full bar and play pizza kitchen for the kiddos. I never wanted to leave.
