One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

Here's how Day Two of the Happy Face M&M Behavior Modification Program went:

Kind of a mixed bag, huh? Yay! Riley didn't hit! Shit! He almost bit!

Then, things continued downhill. Sitting in court this morning, I looked down at my quietly vibrating phone to see those dreaded words: "Washington CDC."

I ran out to the hallway. "Hi, Mrs. Nix? It's Gary Winning. I have Riley in my office ..." You know how the rest of that goes.

A police officer friend I know offered this advice: sign him up for a martial arts type class so he could better learn to channel his aggression. Yeah, I'm sure that will help. I'm sure it will only help him learn how to hit better, and who needs that?

They Grow So Fast, They Left Too Fast

Three of Holden's classmates are making the big leap to kindergarten next fall, and Holden wanted to go to their graduation to cheer them on. It was a bittersweet celebration, quite honestly. It's amazing to see these kids grow and show all the things they've learned, but the ceremony was one more ritualistic reminder of how quick their childhoods are.
It was also sad because the graduation marked Katelyn and her little sister Taylor's last days here. They moved this weekend to Colorado and, while Holden and Riley are a little oblivious to the permanency of their friends' absence, I'm heartbroken for their loss ... and mine. We've found good friends in their family, and I've grown close with their mom, Julie. I've also fallen in love with that little Taylor. Julie and I were in the hospital together, me checking in to deliver Riley one day after Taylor was born. We spent many hours sitting around each other's houses feeding the babies and letting them sleep on us as we chatted the day away.

Soon, we were having playdates and adventures together. I love the way Katelyn and Holden play well together. But no day is ever complete without hugs and cuddles from Taylor at drop-off and pick-up at daycare. She seemed to take to me, too, for some reason. She's my girl, and I've cried a lot in the last few weeks every time I think how I'll miss her love and so miss watching her grow up. We know we'll see them again, but it will probably be years. The kids will barely remember each other, if at all.

Here's Katelyn, looking like such a big girl:
Kyela, a soft-spoken girl with a great singing voice and a flair for art:
Teacher Rhonda with the three grads, including Christian, a mischievous boy who has made huge strides recently, despite some troubles at home:

Sweet Taylor, oh how we'll miss you. As Riley says everyday, "Bye Bye Tay-Tay!!!"
Holden and Katelyn:
