Costa Rica: Day 7

July 22, 2011

This time, after our delicious breakfast, we had an 8 a.m. pick up for a Catamaran tour. Captain Steve, a Texas transplant with seven kids and his own business, hosted about 40 people on a big Catamaran - The Tomcat. With festive music playing and free-flowing rum drinks, the ride was relaxing and beautiful.

View of our hotel from the water:
We headed out to sea about an hour in search of dolphins. We watched for the diving Brown Booby birds, since they eat the same fish as the dolphins. We found flocks of birds, but no dolphins. We did, however, see a whale – which was very exciting.

We turned around and dropped anchor in a cove not far from our hotel near a rock. We snorkeled and saw a few different kinds of fish, but it was pretty cloudy and not the best snorkeling ever. We took turns shooting down the Tsunami slide from the second level of the boat, then were given fresh-grilled fish kabobs, pasta salad pineapple and watermelon. We returned to the Marina near Quepos around 1:15 and were taken back to the hotel.

We pushed through almost unbearable heat and humidity, and exhaustion, to take an excursion to a little beach below the hotel. Along the way, on the road, we had the best monkey sighting ever. White-faced monkeys frolicked in the trees and let us take lots of great pictures.

The beach was beautiful, although it smelled a little like ass (we’re not sure why). Coral and rocks made it difficult to get in the water, but we hung out a little and took pictures. We headed back up to the hotel, and met a sloth on the telephone wires.

We went to the adult pool after ordering drinks, and relaxed for several hours. Jason and Jessie were there, along with a couple other couples we recognized and chatted with. Around 5:30 p.m. we took showers and then hit the happy hour at the hotel for Guayara Sours. Dinner at the hotel was delicious – and convenient with no taxis. We both had pasta. We ran into Matt and Jenna again and chatted with them a bit and said our good-byes.

Back at the room, we packed up and Kevin beat me at two rounds of Rummy 500.
