Costa Rica: Day 2

July 17, 2011

The day began early with our included breakfast at the hotel, which involved rice & beans and plaintains and made us very happy! We were picked up around 8 a.m. by Roy from Adventuras Arenal for the Hanging Bridges Tour. It was near Lake Arenal and began with some monkeys in the trees. During the more than three-hour hike, Roy was our guide and delighted us with lots of information of Costa Rica’s rainforests and wildlife. He went off the trail to find us creatures and tell us stories, like frogs.

We came back to the hotel for a quick lunch, and it began to rain with thunder and lightning. During a break, Kevin ran back to the room to get ready for our next adventure, while I stayed behind to finish looking at photos on the computer. The skies really opened up then, and the waiters wouldn’t let anyone leave. Apparently, the garden next to where we were sitting had been struck by lightning the previous week. As the time drew near for our ride to arrive, the waiter said he’d call for one of the golf carts they have on the property to pick me up. But they said it was electric and wouldn’t go out. He offered me an umbrella, but that just seemed deadly. As I was contemplating a run for it, a golf car arrived with a very nervous bellman who drove superfast to the room.

The rain didn’t stop the rest of the day – including when we were on a hike at the base of the Arenal volcano. It was wet and slippery and we missed out on some good views. From there, our guide, Oscar, took us to the Ecotermales hot springs, along with one of the other couples in our group - Josh and Megan from North Carolina. They were very nice and we hung out in the hot, natural pools and drank daiquiris and mojitos before Oscar came back and took us to a restaurant in La Fortuna – which, unfortunately, turned out to be the same restaurant we ate the previous night!

Here is our guide showing us how strong an ant's pincers are by holding up a leaf:
