On to the First Grade

On his final kindergarten report card, Holden's teacher, Mrs. Hall, said she was looking forward to hearing great things about one of our future presidents. What? It's hard to imagine people like Barak Obama or John F. Kennedy as squirmy, wormy kindergartners who talk out of turn and get time-outs for being too wiggly. But, everyone has to start somewhere.

Excuse us for being modest, but we're confident to report that Holden absolutely KICKED ASS in kindergarten. Reading? Check. Writing? Check. 'Rithmetic? Check. But on top of the academics, Holden's proved himself as quite a little leader. Mrs. Hall says he likes to arrange games (which, I think, sometimes backfires on him when not everyone wants to play the way he does). But, generally, he is well-liked, has lots of friends and is eager to please. These are great qualities in elementary school. But, we know that his jock tendencies will be his saving grace as he gets older, and the bullies zero in on nice, smart kids like him.

On the last day of school, I accompanied Holden and all 120ish kindergartners at Washington Elementary School to a nearby park for some playing and picnic. Here he is with Mrs. Hall:The mother of one classmate made this fun cake for Mrs. Hall. The little girl, Victoria, said she decided the little kid on his back with his legs up in the air was Holden, since he's always squirming around:
This is Anthony, a soccer and CDC buddy who we get to spend lots of time with since he comes home with us a couple times a week because his parents have nasty commutes:
Back at school, the kids got their diplomas:
Then sang a cute song about all that they've learned and being ready for the First Grade:

He made some good friends, even though he occasionally comes home crying that so-and-so was being mean to him. The drama starts young. Here he is with Owen:
And the unlikely trio of Tora, Holden and Ethan:
