Holden is almost four and, darn it, the kid needed to see some snow. So we packed up and headed to the mountains with the Messingers for a weekend of snow.

We stayed at a great little house just outside of Big Bear, and it was perfect and cozy. Holden and Hallie liked sitting at the counter for snacks and meals. They also liked to ham it up for the camera.

We had the honor of celebrating Jami's birthday with some cake on our first night. My homemade cake was nowhere near as cool as the cakes Jami makes, but it met the basic requirement: Frosting.

The kids enjoyed cereal in front of the TV in the morning. The best part was seeing Riley hang with the "big kids." He really took to Hallie, who he followed around - especially intent on blowing raspberries on her belly. For her part, Hallie got to show off some of her nurturing tendencies by giving him lots of hugs and looking out for him.

Considering we went to the snow to, well, play in the snow - we only spent less than two hours actually doing so. The house was cozy and nice and the snow was just so cold and wet! But we lucked out and, just up the street, there was a wooded area with a couple hills for sledding. We stuck to the little one with the kids. Hallie did great, always the brave girl. Holden was a bit more hesitant, but he did a few runs.

Spinning out of control, Mom sacrificed herself for the safety of the youngin'.

Brenny and Riley weren't too keen on sledding. Brenny didn't mind sitting in the snow, but Riley wasn't thrilled with having his feet or his butt anywhere near the stuff. He liked poking at it in my hand, though.

Snow angel, not a corpse:

Before we left, the Bigger Kids took a run on the big hill. Josh torpedoed down:

I slid hesitantly on my butt, using my heels as breaks until I fell off. We didn't get a picture of Jami, who left a trail of expletives behind her!

Kevin the daredevil got some speed:

Holden, just done and ready to go back to the warm, dry house:
