For instance, the other night at one of my semi-regular poker games with my newspaper photographer buddies, I tied for first and came home with a cool $125. That was great.
But a couple months ago, I played in a charity poker tournament for the Redondo Beach Education Foundation. Grandpa Larry joined me for the Thursday night game at a restaurant overlooking the Redondo Beach Harbor. We figured: early evening, for a good cause.
Not so much. We both kept kicking into the night. I kicked a bit longer, made it to the final table and came in 6th out of 65. I got to choose my prize. I had been thinking how great it would be to snag the free airplane ride someone donated, but didn't think there would be a chance.
Luck was on my side that night.
A month or so later, we took the kids on a "surprise" afternoon outing. We kept 'em guessing and then, when we got to the Torrance Airport, things started to come together:

The boys actually got two rides. Our pilot, the plane's co-owner, was kind enough to split the ride into two so both Kevin and I could have a turn in the four seater. We each got a 20-minute ride that circled the Palos Verdes Peninsula on a beautiful afternoon.
