Baruch Atah Addonai...

Before we married, Kevin and I knew that we would have challenges with our kids when it came to religion, especially around the holidays. Since I'm Jewish, and Kevin isn't much of anything, I've lucked-out as far as most mixed marriages go and win by default. We consider ourselves Jewish, living in a Jewish house and raising Jewish kids.

But this time of year, the ever-inquisitive Holden has really forced us to make some clear definitions and draw lines in the sand as far as seasonal observances go. We explained that we celebrate Hannukkah, because we are Jewish. Since Grandma Sheila and Grandpa Steve celebrate Christmas, we celebrate Christmas with them, at their house. So, really, the kids score big in that they get to do both holidays. But it still raised some questions for Holden, like how will Santa know he's not at home and why don't we have a Christmas tree?

I'm proud to say, though, that it all seemed to be sinking in. Holden has talked with his teachers and friends at school about Hannukkah and really seemed interested in the story of Hannukkah.

Here is a bit of our eight nights of lights. Don't fret, Christmas pictures will come up later!

On Hannukkah, you eat foods fried in oil to symbolize the oil that miracously burned for eight days instead of one. Traditionally, that means potato latkes and jelly donuts. We had planned on latkes and Grandma Bonnie's World Famous Brisket for the first night, but Grandma Bonnie had been sick all week and we went to the other Jewish staple food fried in oil - take-out Chinese food.

Holden got a bigger boy bike: Riley got a very cool trash truck that still remains a favorite:
A few nights in, the boys opened their gifts from Aunt Janeen. Holden was very excited about his backpack full o' space ships, rockets and space shuttles: Riley added to his ever-growing collection of airplanes:
Making his airport:
By the eighth night, both boys were doing their best to say the prayers over the candles with me. Holden got pretty close, and Riley mumbled right along:
